The best way to finally win the War on Poverty that we’ve now been fighting for over 45 years now. Is through education and Job Placement. People in poverty don’t escape poverty by staying on Public Assistance. They remain poor on Public Assistance, with a little more money. That they automatically spend just to get by. The way to move people out of poverty is with a good job. So they become Self Sufficient and are paying taxes not just taking from them. The way to do this is to empower people to get themselves out of poverty. This comes through education. One of the reasons why Low Income people are Low Income. Is because they lack the skills and education to get a better job. One of the reasons why people on Public Assistance, is because they lack the skills and education to get a good job. So they are making enough money to support themselves and their family’s. By giving these people an opportunity to go to school or back to school. Like Vocational Schools for example, they can get themselves the skills that they need to get themselves a good job. And become Self Sufficient.
The most effective Anti Poverty programs in the last thirty years have been. The Earned Income Tax Credit or EITC for you acronym junkies, Welfare to Work and Make Work Pay. Which was part of the 2009 Recovery Act. Why, just in case you were wondering, if you weren’t, I’ll tell you anyway. Because they were about work not Welfare. The EITC gives Low Income people who don’t make enough money to pay taxes. The Tax Revenue the otherwise would’ve had to pay. Back to them, so they make enough money that they don’t need to go on Welfare. Welfare to Work is about not only work but education as well. So people on Public Assistance can go back to school. Or go to school to get the skills that they need to get a good job. So they become Self Sufficient. Make Work Pay is where the Federal Government pays the salary’s of people who are on Welfare and Unemployment Insurance. Who work for company’s that can’t afford to hire them. So these people can keep working while they are looking for a permanent job.
If we actually want to finally win the War on Poverty in America. Instead of just talking about it or using it as an excuse to have Social Insurance programs in America. Then we need to put these people to work. And empower them to get the skills that they need to get a good. Through education and then Job Placement. You don’t win this war by just giving them more Tax Dollars.
