When it comes to government, taxes, spending, its pretty simple to me. Figure out what the government does well, what it should do and how much your willing to pay for it, meaning taxes. In a way that benefits the economy and doesn’t hurt it. For me that means the government and I think were all talking about the Federal Government here. I want government to defend, protect, represent, build infrastructure and to help people who are down get themselves back up with a hand up not hand out. When it comes to things that only government should be doing. Its pretty simple, National Security, Foreign Policy,  Law Enforcement and Rule of Law meaning regulation. When it comes to things that government can do well but where the Private Sector also does these things well. Like the Safety Net in the form of Non Profits, education, infrastructure, agriculture, Health Care housing to use as examples. And then we need to figure out to fund these things in an affordable way for the government and the economy. That benefits the economy and doesn’t hurt it.

Since the mid 1960s with the Goldwater Movement and then it got real strong in the late 70s. With the Reagan Movement, conservatives have gone out of their way to make the Federal Government look bad. And have won a lot of battles, with the Republican Party winning three straight Presidential Elections from 1980-88, wining control of the Senate in 1980 and holding it for three Congress’s until 1986. As well as winning control of both Chambers of Congress in 1994. For the first time since 1952. They’ve gone out of their way to make the Federal Government look bad and to argue why we need to decentralize the Federal Government. And give the Private Sector and States more power. Mainly because they’ve been very skillful politically. At making democrats look like Big Government socialists. But also because democrats have fed right into this with some of the positions they’ve taken and candidates they’ve elected. But also because they’ve underestimated this Economic Libertarian Movement. And didn’t fight back properly.

As a liberal I’m not a fan of any form of Big Government, not an authoritarian form or a socialist form. I just want the government to do what we need it to do and what it does well, as I’ve already laid out. But on the Far Right, they don’t want government doing essentially anything. Except National Security and regulating how people live their own lives. Thats the authoritarian version of Big Government. On the Far Left, they want government to do everything except for National Security and Law Enforcement. As it seems sometimes and don’t seem to have a very good understanding of the US Constitution and its limitations. Thats the socialist form of Big Government. With libertarians who I consider to be further left of liberals but not Far Left. They only want government doing what’s laid out in the US Constitution. Not realizing that what government does today, like with Social Insurance and the CIA as examples. The Constitution doesn’t say that government can’t do these things.

To me Limited Government is about, is having what government can only do and what it does well. And figuring out how to pay for it, that benefits the economy and doesn’t hurt it. That doesn’t mean Unlimited Government or Small Government. But Limited Government.
